Canadian Federation of Students donates $30,000 to assist with legal costs for Quebec students

 A standing resolution passed this on June 3rd 2012 by the

Canadian Federation of Students to assist with legal costs

incurred during the strike.

“Be it resolved that efforts by Québec students to maintain an affordable, accessible post-secondary education system be supported including with in-kind and financial support; and

Be it further resolved that a donation of $30,000 be made to the Fonds Légal Indépendant en Soutien à la Grève au Québec to assist students and student unions in Québec with legal costs incurred during the strike against tuition fee hikes; and

Be it further resolved that member locals be encouraged to offer in-kind and financial support to the strike efforts in Québec.”

A motion passed by Canadian Federation of Students  condeming Law 78

Whereas Law 78 has been adopted by the Assemblee national du Quebec on May 18, 2012; and

Whereas Law 78 represents a draconian, repressive attach on dissent and criminalises the right of assembly; and

Whereas Law 78 facilitates and encourages police officers to act with increased brutality and impunity; and

Whereas the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, Amnesty International, legal practitioners, artists, editorialists, intellectuals and personalities from all walks of life have unanimously denounced this front line attack on the fundamental and inalienable rights of freedom of expression, of association and demonstration; therefore

Be it resolved that member locals be encouraged to write statements condemning Local 78; and

Be it further resolved that member locals be encouraged to organise and attend demonstrations, direct actions and engages in acts of civil disobedience against Law 78; and

Be it further resolved that member local be encouraged to approach this years honourary degree recipients and convocation speakers at their institution and ask them to wear the read square in solidarity with the Quebec student strike and in condemnation of Law 78.
